Inchcape Shipping Services

Inchcape Shipping Service offers a thorough suite of services designed to meet the needs of its customers, and with more than 160 years of experience in shipping and related services, Inchcape Shipping Services has the knowhow to get the job done.

The company is one of the worlds’ longest running, largest, and leading providers of maritime services. With more than 300 offices in 66 countries employing over 3,800 people, Inchcape Shipping Services is one of the few shipping services providers that can offer its clients a range of global resources tailored to meet each client’s individual needs.

A diverse range of services allows the company to serve a broad customer base across a range of industries. The company serves clients across the oil, cruise, container and bulk commodity sectors as well as serving naval, government and inter-governmental clients. The company’s commitment to innovation and diversification means that landside services, such as commercial and humanitarian logistics, transit, and offshore support are also available for clients.

With its earliest genesis as Mackinnon Mackenzie & Company in 1847 (incorporating as Inchcape & Co. in 1958), Inchcape Shipping Services has grown organically and through strategic acquisition to become one of the world’s foremost providers of shipping and logistics services. With continued growth and diversification, by 1993 it was clear that it was time to unify the company’s shipping services into a single entity; so it was that Inchcape Shipping Services was incorporated, bringing a loose confederacy of shipping agencies into an integrated world-wide network and creating a clear set of operating standards and procedures to best serve customers with a consistently outstanding level of service, quality, and reliability.

Australia ISS offers comprehensive port coverage with 26 manned offices servicing 52 ports. All our offices are wholly owned and staffed by dedicated ISS personnel totalling over 200 people nationally. Today, Inchcape Shipping Services is owned and operated by Istithmar PJSC, a major investment house based in the United Arab Emirates.

Inchcape Shipping Services is guided by the company’s strong vision and philosophy of service, which includes reaching the highest standards of service and safety by valuing employees; continuing to grow toward being the world leader in maritime and cargo services; and to meet or exceed shareholder expectations by staying true to the original vision.

One of the company’s greatest strengths comes from the effective application of its clear vision for the provision of high quality services. To be the world leader in maritime cargo, ISS continues to expand its network to better serve clients, develop scalable outsourcing solutions across the globe, and globalise its service range. The company offers three inter-related business streams that have been carefully designed to serve clients’ core business needs. Through marine, cargo, and supply chain solutions, ISS can be sure that clients are experiencing the highest level of professional and reliable services possible. The company provides these services worldwide, with offices in the Middle East, India, and Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and North Africa, South and Central America, and North America.

Despite the recent global financial crisis, Inchcape Shipping Services has continued to experience growth and currently employs nearly four thousand people across Australia and globally. Indeed, over the course of the last three years, the company has tripled its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation, has developed 300 offices in 66 countries, and has managed over 70,209 port calls. With revenue of more than 2.5 billion dollars in the last year alone, Inchcape Shipping Services continues to be one of the strongest service providers worldwide.

In order to remain an industry leader during these uncertain economic times, ISS continues to place a priority upon diversification of services, and works to provide a comprehensive suite of services for customers both large and small. Moving from pure port agency, ISS offers a comprehensive variety of marine and cargo services, including logistics, disbursement management, crew and spare-parts logistics, vessel lay-up services and accommodation. In this way, ISS can offer absolutely any service that adds value to the customer anywhere along the supply chain.

Increasingly, the team is working with clients by building relationships of understanding, to manage client risk in those parts of the supply chain where the company has expertise. Inchcape Shipping Services is able to offer incredible value to customers through the company’s breadth of experience and financial strength. In this way, Inchcape Shipping Services continues to be a first choice as global outsourcing partner.

The company’s commitment to innovation is apparent in all that it does, from the smallest detail right up to largest vessel. The company is proactive in its approach to challenges, and ensures all of its services are carried out effectively and efficiently. For example, in response to the ever-present threat of piracy, particularly in the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Aden, and West Africa, ISS, in company with its partners, has developed a comprehensive suite of anti-piracy measures designed to protect cargo, vessels, and crews. Inchcape Shipping Services’ Vessel Protection Service includes cost effective armour retrofit services designed to protect against rocket propelled grenade and small arms fire.

Looking ahead, Inchcape Shipping Services employs a detailed road map designed to guide the company’s decisions based upon its core values and strengths. By building upon its already extensive client base and strong history of relationship building across the industry, ISS projects continued organic growth and strategic acquisition. Continually developing new relationships and strengthening those already existing will allow the company to complete the transition from “partner of choice” to “strategic partner” by continued provision of the company’s high quality suite of services.

Though the group already operates across 66 countries worldwide, plans are already in place to establish an ISS presence in those geographic locations in which it does not yet currently operate. This trend speaks to a true globalisation of the company’s product and service range. Projected continued growth in profits will be driven by increased revenue driven by continued growth in new markets as well as through the optimisation of productivity through the continuous process of innovation.

At the end of the day, though, Inchcape Shipping Services recognises that its greatest asset, the one that makes all the difference, is the global team of employees, managers, and directors that offer their expertise to provide the highest level of quality service, no matter where in the world they do business. The people of ISS work diligently to provide excellence in service for each and every client, traits which are reinforced through careful selection and training with a focus on personal welfare, strong ethical values, commitment, and initiative.

By bringing talented individuals into the industry and nurturing their growth, ISS hopes to contribute positively to the overall personal growth of each individual and the industry as a whole. This process encourages individual career advancement, builds future leaders, helps the company to better anticipate the needs of its clients, and encourages greater professionalism across the broader industry.

In order to ensure that every member of Inchcape Shipping Services’ global team meets the high levels of excellence, Inchcape Shipping Services developed the ISS Marine Academy to provide learning and professional development opportunities to assist each employee to reach his or her full potential. Developed with the company’s strategy in mind, the Academy offers training programmes designed to support individual professional growth as well as the growth and prosperity of the group as a whole. ISS recognises that having great people means that the company can offer great services across the world. Each programme promotes the group’s strong commitment to ethical practice and is implemented using cutting edge training practises and technology. Training courses include induction training, corporate compliance and ethics awareness, fundamentals of shipping, presentation skills, finance for non-finance managers, and more.

This is one of many ways that the company works to give back to its people and the many communities in which it operates. Inchcape Shipping Services operates many valuable programs meant to build and strengthen communities, such as the ISS Lighthouse Relay Voyage which was launched in 2011.

With its rich history, depth of experience, and commitment to excellence in all the company does, Inchcape Shipping Services is able to offer truly global marine and related services on a local level for clients across the globe.

Making Sense of Management

Management is the art, or science, of getting things done through people. Sounds fairly straightforward – except for the fact that people are not robots waiting to do our bidding. People have their own minds, motivations, and goals. So how do managers keep operations – and the people behind them – running as planned?
