Car Transport Made Easy

“I was assisting everybody,” says Scott, who today is the Managing Director of Carways Pty Ltd, one of Australia’s best-known and most reliable motor vehicle transportation companies. “We’re the largest family-owned car carrier in the industry across the nation,” he says. “Any of the bigger ones are all corporate.”

With over 1,700 clients, Scott believes Carway’s family ownership benefits not only the company itself, but its many customers through personalised service and tremendous attention to detail – not always possible with massive corporations who must answer to shareholders. “When it’s a family company, it’s your reputation on the line,” he says. “Being able to talk to the person that owns the company is always a benefit. If you’ve got 5,000 shareholders and someone’s got a problem, they can’t talk to every shareholder and tell them how bad their service is or compliment them.”

For over 40 years, Carways has prided itself on its prominent position as one of Australia’s premier car transport companies. Today, Scott Brown continues his family’s commitment to superior quality service, a tradition handed down by his father Bevis and late uncle Harvey, who established Carways in 1970.

The reasons behind the formation of the company at the time were simple, says Scott: Australia’s capital city, Canberra, was rapidly growing, and since there was no locally based car vehicle transporter at the time, brothers Harvey and Bevis Brown – who had previously owned other transport businesses involved in freighting eggs and stock feeds into the Canberra region – decided to found Carways to serve the nation’s automotive sector.

With experience that spans two generations, the successful family-run business is owned and operated today by Scott. His father Bevis Brown, stepped down as Director last year. Growing to a staff of 60 today, the business started small, located on a block of land next to the family homestead in Hall, ACT. As the years passed, the company kept pace with growing demands for its motor vehicle transportation services – from just two trucks servicing local dealerships between Canberra and Sydney to a fleet of 50 today, ranging from single car carriers right up to 11 car B-doubles.

Soon, the company was taking on daily services between Sydney and Melbourne, Albury-Wodonga and the Cooma-Monaro region, and realised that it was necessary to establish depots in other locations, including Melbourne, Victoria and Sydney, New South Wales, with local trucks being introduced to facilitate local pickup and deliveries. Today, Carways has four direct locations, and another 10 subagents who have worked with the company for a decade.

Building the Family Business
Always looking toward the future, Carways is currently expanding its premises in Lismore, New South Wales. “We will have larger facilities, and this will enhance operations,” especially increasing efficiency on the Sydney Brisbane legs, explains Scott, who himself has transitioned over the years along with the family business, from being a company driver, working his way into the operations field, progressing to a company director and today, to Managing Director.

Continuing to grow, Carways was able to capitalise on an increased volume of freight between Sydney, Lismore and Brisbane, and introduced additional resources to facilitate local pickup and delivery in the Sydney Metropolitan area and more frequent services to Brisbane, Gold Coast, Northern Rivers, Newcastle, and Sydney. By early 2011, the company moved into a new, larger Melbourne depot in Jessica Way, Truganina. With a significantly increased depot size and secure storage facilities, the company was able to further expand its areas of coverage in Victoria and South Australia and provide even more reliable, efficient, and regular service between Melbourne and Adelaide.

In late 2011, Carways took the company to yet another level with its Lismore division when it acquired additional valuable staff, equipment, and resources. The result was a significant increase in the company’s presence, service, and coverage throughout Southern Queensland, Northern New South Wales and the Lismore area. Continuing to grow, Carways and Scott Brown remain loyal to the vision created by Scott’s father and uncle, and build on decades of hands-on industry experience through passion, growth, and an unwavering commitment to customer service.

Today, Carways continues to uphold its long-standing set of values and principles. These include providing reliable and efficient motor vehicle transportation, delivering exceptional customer service, providing a safe and positive working environment, and excelling in all areas of the company’s service.

Dedicated Staff, Modern Vehicles
With a staff comprising highly skilled professional drivers, experienced mechanics, operational managers and administration, all Carways employees have refined skills in the specialised field of vehicle transport. In addition to maintaining all equipment in peak condition, Carways prides itself on maintain a modern fleet of late model trucks and trailers, utilising the latest technologies to make transportation as efficient as possible and regularly upgrading and updating the vehicles.

“You’ve got to have the right equipment,” says Scott, “modern, flexible equipment that can carry different makes and models of cars. You’ve always got to be upgrading, because car makes and models, shapes and sizes change all the time. And personal service is key, maintaining good customer relations from your office to your admin staff right through to your drivers. We have a fantastic staff base with everyone working as part of the team. Everyone has to be on the same page, working toward customer service.”

To maintain its competitive advantage, Carways maintains an impressive fleet of car-carrying vehicles, and offers total interstate vehicle logistics transport, from the eastern seaboard of Australia including Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. The company’s fleet comprises multiple combinations, from single vehicle slide bed tilt trays up to 11 car carrier B-Double combinations. Exclusively transporting cars, the company handles the safe and efficient movement of all kinds of vehicles including new, used, fleet cars, and private movements, all the way from prestige collectable vehicles through to modified four wheel drive and light commercial vehicles. To provide customers with the highest possible level of service, Carways has dedicated trucks offering overnight shuttle services between Brisbane, Sydney Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide.

As Australia’s largest family-owned and independently operated car carrier specialising in interstate motor vehicle transport on the nation’s east coast, Carways has earned a solid reputation with a wide variety of businesses over the years, including automobile dealerships, bond stores, car auctions, and car rental firms. According to Scott, it is not unusual for a car rental company to require 300 vehicles for events like the Melbourne Cup or Melbourne Grand Prix, and for Carways to transport them from various locations.

The company also has fork lift and storage facilities available in depots including Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Lismore, Wagga Wagga, and Cooma.

At Carways, the company’s client list reads like a Who’s Who of the automotive industry, and includes customers like Hyundai Glovis Australia, Avis Rent a Car, Hertz Australia, Mercedes Benz Australia, Toyota Motor Company, Mazda Australia, Peter Warren Group, Rolfe Motor Group, Australian Fleet Sales, and many others. “We have a very strong business partnership with Hyundai Glovis Australia and this will continue to grow with the increase in market share of the Hyundai product range.” Customers can also drop off or collect their vehicles from any of the company’s depot locations. Specialising in drivable cars and commercials vehicles, Carways can accommodate bookings from 1 to 300 vehicles, and can assist with non-drivable vehicle transportation subject to the vehicles condition and whereabouts.

To make car transport solutions easier for all customers, Carways has a convenient number with helpful staff to call for more information at 1300 CARWAY, and downloadable forms for Booking, Credit Card Applications, and Terms and Conditions. The company has also received a considerable amount of positive feedback from its website – where clients can get a Quick Quote, arrange Private Bookings or Dealer Bookings, and contact Carways – and keeps looking ahead to the future.

“We’ve been continually growing for the last 20 years, and I believe we’re going to keep growing,” says Scott. “We’re certainly providing a good service out there, and we fill a niche in the market. And we’d like to grow with Australia’s population – as Australia grows, so does Carways.”

Making Sense of Management

Management is the art, or science, of getting things done through people. Sounds fairly straightforward – except for the fact that people are not robots waiting to do our bidding. People have their own minds, motivations, and goals. So how do managers keep operations – and the people behind them – running as planned?
